One of the challenges for reserve officers is attaining command experience. A new program that is just launching now allows reservists to sever as ROTC Detachment Commanders. Basically, if you are selected you will be put on AFROTC Instructor Voluntary Limited Period of Active Duty (VLPAD), or long-term MPA tour in order to serve as Commander of the ROTC Detachment. This program allows for reservists to return to Extended Active Duty (EAD) starting in summer 2017 for a 3-year tour. MPA tours will be for a minimum of two years with a potential extension to a third year.
